Instructions for upgrading AVG Free to version 7.5

by Dale Atchison

I sent this email to most of my customers Jan 14, 2007; several wrote back thanking me profusely for making the process seem a little clearer.  That felt good.

(Mac users, please ignore this message.)

Y'all:

I'm sorry this has turned into such a trouble-plagued process for so many of you.  One last email, and I'll shut up.  I promised not to spam you, and I'm awfully close to breaking that promise over this upgrade and its pitfalls.

Grisoft has extended the deadline for upgrading from version 7.1 to version 7.5; it's now February 7 '07.  And I last updated this page Mar 2, 2008.

  1. Double-click the four-color AVG icon in your System Tray, then click on Information  »  About AVG Free.  If the Program Version starts with 7.5, you're done, ignore the rest of this message.  (Except for the part where I say "Thank you for your business".)
  2. If your Program Version starts with 7.1,  click on this link to get AVG Free version 7.5.516.  Save the file to your desktop.
  3. Once the download is complete, double-click the saved file to start the upgrade.
  4. Click "Next >" on the AVG "Welcome!" screen
  5. Click "Accept" on the "License Agreement on Use of an AVG Free Edition" screen
  6. Select "Repair installation" on the "Select Setup Type" screen and click "Next"
  7. Select "Restart the computer now" (automatically pre-selected by the program) and click "OK" on the "Installation Complete!" screen to restart your computer and complete the installation.
If you're running Roxio's Easy CD Creator, you may get an error message; as near as I can tell from the Grisoft and Roxio websites, this is only a problem with ECDC version 6.  If you get the error message, click here for an updated driver from Roxio that *MAY* fix the problem.

If the Roxio fix doesn't work, uninstall Roxio, upgrade AVG, and reinstall Roxio.  If it still causes a problem with AVG, my only remaining suggestion is to remove Roxio completely.  If you're running Win XP, it writes to CDs without Roxio installed --- you just won't be able to copy CDs or create bootable data CDs.  And Windows 9x users can burn music CDs from within Windows Media Player, I-Tunes, RealPLayer, or Sonic Jukebox (all available at www.Download.com).

Here's a free CD/DVD burner program, also available at Download.com.  It has a pretty interface, no adware or spyware that I can see, it isn't ad-suported, and there's no beg screens.  Not only would it work to replace Roxio in the event you can't fix the AVG problem, it would come in handy if you ever have to reinstall Windows on a blank drive and you don't the CD to reload whichever CD burner program came pre-loaded.  Click Here to download EXPStudio's CD Ripper Burner Converter 4.

I swear this is my last mass email on this subject, though I will continue to answer individual requests for assistance or clarification.

And as always, Thanks For Your Business!, and for recommending me to your friends <hint>.
