Scangear Toolbox

"The SGTBOX.EXE File is linked to missing Export MFC42.DLL:6615"

This is the nag that I get on every boot up.  In addition, my scanner's one-button won’t start Scangear Tool Box.

Can you help me?

Don

Don,

Try running SFC, Microsoft’s System File Checker:

  1. Click on START  »  RUN  »  type in SFC  »  click OK.
  2. Click the radio button that says EXTRACT ONE FILE FROM INSTALLATION DISK.
  3. In the box below the button, type MFC42.DLL and click START.  Windows will display the source and destination paths for the file.  The source (RESTORE FROM) should be C:\WINDOWS\OPTIONS\CABS or C:\WIN98 or the \WIN98 folder of your CD-ROM drive.  The destination (SAVE FILE IN) should be C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM.
  4. Click OK to restore the file.
It may still be necessary to reinstall the Scangear software to make it all work like it used to, depending on what caused it to stop working in the first place.

Dale

Outcome:

Ran SFC (4 times before it would work!) and reinstalled CanoScan Toolbox.  Rebooted, no nag, and the button works!

Thanks!

Don

"No Subject" Warning

I used to get a message advising me when there was no entry in the Subject Line of an e-mail.  I accidentally checked the box next to "Don't show me this again".  Now, I don't get any warning when I accidentally send an e-mail without a Subject.  I have tried everything that I know (admittedly, not that much) to get it back, but without success.

Would you please help me get that warning message back?

Richard

Richard,

To correct this error in Microsoft Outlook Express:

  1. Click START » RUN » type REGEDIT » click OK.
  2. In the left pane, navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER-\Identities\{F85DBC40-F032-11D3-9030-444553540001} \Software\Microsoft\Outlook- Express\5.0\Dont Show Dialogs.  Note that the long gibberish number in braces will probably be different; this is how Microsoft spells your identity name internal to the operating system.
  3. In the right-hand pane, find the item: MAIL EMPTY SUBJECT WARNING, and double-click on it to edit its properties.
  4. The VALUE data field will contain a value of 1.  Change it to 0 to restore the warning.
  5. Exit REGEDIT by clicking on the X in the upper right-hand corner, or by pressing the ALT-F4 key combination.
  6. Reboot.
You should have your old warning back.

Dale

Outcome:

Followed your instructions.  Sent myself a test message without a Subject, and IT WORKED!

Thanks.

Richard

Note:  Some really cautious types - and even some self-appointed 'experts' - would ask, "Don't I need to make a backup of the Registry before I go making changes to it?"  As patiently as possible, I would respond to them, "No, it isn't necessary."  If you make a mistake and ruin the Registry, you can always use F8 to stop at the Startup Menu and tell Windows to Use the Last Settings That Worked if you're running Windows XP.  If you're still using Win 98, stop at Command Prompt Only (NOT Safe Mode Command Prompt Only, that's entirely different), then run SCANREG /RESTORE <Enter>.  Choose the latest .CAB file that says "Started" - that's the last settings that worked.  Reboot.

Thanks for asking!
